About Victoria
How long have you lived in the Deagon Ward?
Living just outside the Deagon electorate – but visiting friends who did – I moved into the suburb of Sandgate back in 1997 and have lived here ever since. Deagon Ward offers wonderful places to live – with the seaside parklands, wonderfully natural bushland, lagoons and creek systems, schools, retail centres, great parks and most importantly its great people.
How long have you been the Councillor for Deagon Ward?
I was first elected to represent residents of Deagon Ward back in March 2000. It’s been a great honour to represent this vibrant, active local community.
What did you do before you were elected to Council?
Before I was elected to Council, I had a few different jobs. For a few years, I worked at the State Library of Queensland as their Public Affairs Officer. I also worked for my predecessor Denise Herbert, and Federal Member Wayne Swan who taught me greatly about being an elected representative. I’ve also graduated from a Bachelor of Arts (Majoring Australian Political Economy).
What is your favourite thing about the Deagon area?
I don’t want to sound corny, but it’s the people who live here make it my favourite ‘thing’ about the area. We’re blessed with so many people who generously volunteer in the hundreds of sporting, artistic, cultural, multicultural and community organisations who make our communities livable. I like getting out and about and catching up with locals who are so passionate about where they live.
Where do you see Deagon Ward in the future?
Thanks to a very strong heritage of volunteering, I can see the areas that comprise Deagon Ward continuing to enjoy a very strong sense of community. This strong foundation will see us manage changes to the area as improvement to the livability of our suburbs. With your help and support, I can work with you to achieve this.
How are you working for the Deagon area?
Local Government has a huge role to play in shaping communities. I’m working to make sure we protect those things that make our suburbs special, and working with the local community to achieve the changes they want to see happen.
In recent years, it’s been a pleasure to work with residents to achieve some great results, including upgrading the Sandgate and Brighton foreshore parklands, saving the Sandgate Hawks AFL club at Taigum, protecting an additional 90 hectares of bushland at Boondall and Brighton, improving park facilities in every suburb, and upgrading Deagon Sports sporting fields.
